With the end of the first term at Goshen Elementary students earned some prizes including books, backpacks, and a bike from the Roads to Success program. The program awards students for reading at home. Each week students earn tickets to be put into a drawing at the end of each term. The first bike of the year was given to Bridger Eastwood in Mrs. Norton's fourth grade class. Keep up the reading students!
Everyone takes a good nutritious school lunch, served daily, for granted. It's always just there, it seems. Not so much last Wednesday during the massive power outage in the south part of the county. Nebo School District's back-up plan was to just serve a snack of cold food on hand in the school's kitchen, if the power remained off, as was expected. When the power came back on at 11:00, it was time to get lunch ready at Goshen Elementary School. Goshen was back on "Plan A," which is to get a hot, well-balanced meal to the students for lunch. Fourth-grade students at Goshen Elementary had fun watching some of their classmates try to run breathing through a straw. They saw what effects drugs can have on their bodies. The students were excited to have BYU athletes who are part of "The Buff Don't Puff" come and visit their school to teach them about not doing drugs. After the presentation students signed a poster agreeing to not use drugs.
Students at Goshen Elementary got to dress up for different themes for their Red Ribbon Week. Students were reminded of the harmful effects drugs can cause to their bodies. Students had a crazy sock day saying they would "sock-it to drugs."
Goshen Elementary was fortunate to have Assistant Superintendent Wilson read with a first grade class. Mrs. Lopez's first graders anxiously listened to Llama Llama Red Pajama read aloud by Assistant Superintendent Wilson. He made the book come alive for the students. Loving books himself, Mr. Wilson donated this very fun book to the the class he visited. "Thank you for making reading fun!" the kids said.
Goshen Elementary ended September with their Fall Carnival. This year one activity was Deputy Sheriff Jim Tindell used his police radar to check the speed of student softball and baseball players. The top speed for boys was 57 miles per hour. The girls were right behind at 55mph. Also, Carwynn Carter, who by day is the head custodian at Goshen Elementary School, gave train rides to kids. Students didn't leave until Mr.
Mr. Jason Dickie's second grade class at Goshen Elementary School won the first school spirit contest at the school this year. The students of the winning class wear the school colors of yellow and blue more than students in any other class. This is also the day of the PTA's Fall Carnival--another good reason to show your spirit. The other adult in the picture is Mr. Eric Cuthill, who is serving as a student teacher in the room from the University of Phoenix.
This year Mrs. Valerie Corlett, the music specialist at Goshen Elementary, started the year off with the fourth graders learning how to play the recorder. The students have been very excited to learn how to play their first two notes on their new instruments. For some of them it is their first instrument to play. Soon they will be playing "Hot Cross Buns.” The students at Goshen are looking forward to playing all kinds of instruments this year.
